ANIMALS; REGULATION AND DEREGULATION OF INDUSTRY; RESEARCH; CRUELTY TO ANIMALS
Resumen:
''The basic premise of why this is needed is that we don't know what's going on inside laboratories,'' said Sara Romer, a representative of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which supports the ordinance proposed by The Cambridge Committee for Responsible Research. ''The public has a right to know what's going on.'' No Abuse, Opponents Say ''In the country 95 percent of all research animals are rats, mice and other rodents,'' Ms. [Anneliz Hannan] said. ''Less than 2 percent are dogs and cats. One percent are primates. The rest are ungulates and rabbits. There are no primates in Cambridge. The problem they have is with mice and rats, and I don't think the public is in an uproar over mice and rats.'' Dr. [Carolyn Compton], a principal in the development of artificial skin, asserted that the use of animals was necessary. ''Activists portray us as using animals when we don't need to,'' she said. ''That's ridiculous. We don't have computer models, we only have biological creatures, and research data must be comparable enough to human models to be useful.''
